SMITH Mary T (1904 - 1995)
Mary T. Smith, née à Brookhaven, Mississippi, a passé la majeure partie de sa vie à tenir une ferme et à travailler comme cuisinière. A la trentaine, après un mariage de courte durée avec un métayer nommé John Smith, elle s'est installée à Hazlehurst où elle a gagné sa vie comme domestique. Vers 1978, Mary Smith s'est mise à remplir sa cour de peintures : silhouettes aux couleurs vives et animaux, sur des planches de bois ou des plaques de tôle. Ses œuvres sont rassemblées dans les collections permanentes du Smithsonian American Art Museum et du American Folk Art Museum.
